Under 6’s & Under 7’s
Our Under 6 and Under 7 players, some as young as 4, learn the skills of the game such as passing, running with the ball and scoring tries with no tackling or contact element as part of the game.
Two handed touch on the shorts replaces tackling and the players learn the ‘ruck’ by handing the ball to a team-mate after being touched.
This form of the game introduces kids to the sport in a fun, safe environment and gives them confidence and ability to go forward by teaching the skills that they will build on in older grades.
Under 8’s & Under 9’s
Tackling is introduced into the game in the Under 8’s and is taught in a controlled way, with the guidance of the NSW SmartRugby program, a course for coaches and referees who are involved in the game where there is a tackling element. Visit the NSW Rugby website for more information on the SmartRugby program and initiatives.
The kids are also introduced to the world of scrums and lineouts with a three-man, non-contested version, which basically involves the players forming the scrum or the lineouts and putting or throwing the ball into their team without any pushing or lifting. Again, these skills are introduced in a safe, controlled way.
Minis Comp
The minis teams play in the Warringah Junior Rugby Minis Comp in a 30 – 40 minute game on Saturday mornings. There are no finals games and no game records kept. The aim of the comp is to introduce the players to game time and have fun along the way. Every player receives a trophy from Warringah Juniors at the end of the season.
Training
Training for the minis is held at Wakehurst Rugby park on Wednesdays between 5pm and 6.30pm, depending on coach availability. The club canteen is always open and we run the bbq so you can enjoy a social chat with other Mums & Dads and take the children home exercised and fed!
